Jyotirlinga in Uttar Pradesh

Jyotirlinga in Uttar Pradesh

The only Jyotirlinga in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh has the very famous Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga. This jyotirlinga is very special as it is the first Jyotirlinga to have emerged on this earth. Hence we can say that this is the oldest Jyotirlinga temple in India.

The city where the Jyotirlinga is located, Varanasi, is the oldest known place in India. The old name of Varanasi is Kashi, and this city is famous for being a sacred place for the death rituals of deceased people. It is said that those who die at Kashi, attain moksha or liberation from life and death.

The main idol in Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga temple is known as Lord Vishwanath or Lord Vishveshwara. He is incarnated as the divine form of Lord Shiva and his name means Lord of the Universe.

Jyotirlinga temples in India

All the Jyotirlinga temples in India are places where Lord Shiva manifested himself in the form of a divine pillar of light. This is the reason why the temples are called Jyotirlinga or ‘a linga in the form of light’.

This Jyotirlinga is not made by any man or woman but emerged out of itself. Thus the Shiv linga is worshipped as Lord Shiva himself. It is said that Lord Shiva is present in the Jyotirlinga in a subtle form.
